Kazár – 2012

Puppet Theatre and Lapidarium

The site for the construction was at the Kazár „Laskafesztivál” (t/n: laska is a special, regional variation of pancake). We had the vision of a playhouse and a puppet theatre at the place of corn/maize crib (t/n: góre, a preliminary building usually made of wicker for storing maize) that was in a bad state. Planning started with a careful surveying of the site, which was followed by collective brainstorming. The small building of the final plan appeared as a box that could be variously opened and closed, thus occasionally serving as a stage-like structure facing the audience in two directions or alternatively could offer an enclosed space to retreat. The colourful covering catches the attention of children, yet it has a structural function for the building, too. Besides the functional requirements, it was a crucial factor for the body of the structure to be adequately positioned, as well as to be adaptable to the authentic environment. In its appearance and its creation of the details the structure, however, reflects contemporary concerns, slightly standing out from its context, taking upon itself the expressive mode of the age and its creators.
