Chapel of Rebirth

Designer: Imre Makovecz

Building camps are the basis of teaching the course of organic architecture. During these two week sessions the experience of co-operative work guarantees that knowledge acquired all through the year and practice combine their forces to offer genuine expertise. The building camp was supported by 22 forestries of the local government, the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service, and the Hungarian Development Bank Ltd. Our goal was to construct Imre Makovecz’s last design, the Chapel of Rebirth.

What is the point of an organic architecture building camp? Makovecz answered the question in 1982 like this: „it is for not cutting into each other’s leg with a pickaxe!”  That is, for the students to be able to cooperate, to pay attention to each other. Individuality and personality that rules everything nowadays find their actual place in the process of creation. It is to experience that a building is not a heap of stones, one put onto the other or adjusted pieces of timber but of participation, of success, of conflicts, and of great realizations as well, embodying the bridge between heaven and earth.
